NEW DELHI: The standoff in Tihar Jail is likely to be over with Anna Hazare set to come out of the prison after a night-long protest demanding that he be allowed to launch his indefinite strike from a venue of his choice in the capital.

Hazare, who was ordered to be released on Tuesday night after a day-long detention before he was to begin his fast demanding strong Lokpal, had refused to come out of the prison unless he was allowed to protest fromJP Park without conditions.

Activists Kiran Bedi and Swami Agnivesh announced to the hundreds of supporters waiting since Tuesday night that the 73-year-old Gandhian was about to come out of the prison anytime now.

"The government has bowed down. We will have to be prepared to go to JP Park in a peaceful manner," Agnivesh said.

RTI activist Akhil Gogoi said government has given enough indications to Hazare that he can launch his protest from the park without conditions.

However, lawyer Prashant Bhushan told reporters outside that "we have no information or confirmation yet whether the government has conceded to the demands of Hazare that he will be allowed to sit on fast in JP Park without any conditions on the number of days".

Over the last few days, Team Hazare had refused to give a written undertaking that he will end his protest within three days and restrict the number of protesters to 5,000.

Hazare and seven of his aides were picked up from an east Delhi apartment on Tuesday morning hours before he was to launch his protest fast at JP Park after Delhi Police failed to persuade him to give it up.

Police arrested him on the ground he was about to commit a cognisable offence but in a sudden turn of events government decided to release him after protests erupted across the country against its action.

Addressing the crowd outside Tihar jail, Bhushan, one of the close associates of Hazare, said "today's protest represents the significance of people's struggle not just against corruption but a shot in the arm for democracy".

Anna freed, but refuses to leave Tihar

Gandhian Anna Hazare was jailed in New Delhi on Tuesday morning before starting his fast for an effective anti-corruption law, sparking mass protests that drew tens of thousands across India.

Stunned by the People Power, authorities did a U-turn within 12 hours and freed him but the former soldier refused to walk out of the jail until he was allowed to hold his planned fast without any fetters.

Just six hours after he was driven to the Tihar Jail after 3pm after being sentenced to a week's judicial custody, an unprecedented outburst of spontaneous public anger led Delhi Police to release him.

But Hazare, 74, having tasted victory, declined to move until his demands were met.

Hazare confidante Kiran Bedi -- a decorated former police officer who too was detained but released within hours -- said the Gandhian was determined to pursue his fast at the JP Park in the heart of the capital -- minus the prohibitory orders imposed by police.
She said he would not leave Tihar Jail until this condition was met.
The day-long drama effectively left the government floundering, with Congress leaders struggling to defend their earlier hardline stand against a Gandhian who has become an icon in India's war on corruption.
In the evening, Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi called on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh who earlier convened a meeting of senior ministers to discuss the tense situation -- and the likely political fallout.
"We can apologize" for arresting Hazare, Congress spokesperson Renuka Chaudhry said late in the evening, as protests in support of the man raged in numerous places, principally in New Delhi and Mumbai where thousands poured out of their homes holding Indian flags, cloth banners and posters.
As night broke, crowds in the capital only swelled, mainly outside Tihar Jail and the Chhatrasal sports stadium in another corner of the city where hundreds had been detained for siding with Hazare.
Tihar Jail spokesman Sunil Gupta said shortly before 9pm that Hazare had been let off from his cell but he was in the prison office, talking to officials and refusing to leave.
Eminent jurist Soli Sorabjee said the government had tripped badly.
"What is happening in the government?" Sorabjee asked on TimesNow television.
"This is a gigantic folly, a gigantic miscalculation" by the government.
The widely condemned arrests of Hazare and his key associates crippled parliament as an otherwise divided opposition closed ranks.
The Bharatiya Janata Party and the Communist Party of India-Marxist called for protests across India Wednesday.
"The reaction is tremendous all over India," said former Supreme Court judge Santosh Hegde in Bangalore, one of scores of cities that saw numerous small and big demonstrations in support of Hazare.
"People are pouring out their anger."
It all began shortly after 7am when policemen in civilian clothes swooped on Hazare and trusted activist Arvind Kejriwal as they stepped out of a middle class apartment in east Delhi.
They were to begin their hunger strike, in violation of police orders, for a strong lokpal bill in place of the government-sponsored one that excludes the prime minister, the judiciary and a mass of junior government officials from its purview.
As hundreds blocked a main road, the police were stuck with Hazare and Kejriwal.
Eventually he was taken to the police officers' mess in another part of the city, then to another office and finally sent to prison when he refused to sign a bail bond.
Before being detained, Hazare -- aware that he could be arrested -- said in a recorded video message: "Don't let my arrest stop this movement. This is the nation's second struggle for freedom."
The message had an electrifying effect.
In towns and cities across India, spontaneous protests erupted. Tens of thousands took to the streets shouting slogans against the government and hailing the Gandhian.
The biggest shows of solidarity were reported from New Delhi and Mumbai.
Apart from major cities such as Bangalore, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Chandigarh, Lucknow and Ahmedabad, numerous big and small protests took place in Udaipur, Jammu, Selam, Bhopal, Surat, Rajkot, Patna, Guwahati, Raipur, Shimla, Mandi, Amritsar, Ludhiana, Bhiwani -- and many more.
The people who took to the streets were dominantly from the middle class -- sick and tired of India's endemic corruption. There were men and women, from vocal teenagers to spirited men even in their 80s.
There was no case of violence anywhere in the country.
Once Hazare was taken to Tihar Jail, large numbers offered themselves for arrest here. The number swelled to around 1,400, by official admission. After a while police refused to arrest any more saying that the makeshift prison -- Chhatrasal stadium -- was overflowing.
Activists insisted that up to 5,000 had been detained.
Senior ministers justified the arrest but sounded defensive.
Human resource development minister Kapil Sibal even suggested that Hazare could again talk to the government over the proposed lokpal bill.
Ministers denied that Delhi Police acted under political pressure.
Celebrities too stepped in to verbalise their distress.
Lyricist Javed Akhtar said: "I have had certain reservations about Anna's method but his arrest cannot be condoned. It is undemocratic, unacceptable."

NGOs stage dharna against Anna’s arrest

NGOs stage dharna against Anna’s arrest

FEROZEPUR: Representatives of different NGO's sat on dharna at Shaheed Udham Singh Chowk on Tuesday, to support Anna Hazare's fight against corruption and to protest his arrest.

The NGO's criticized the Delhi police and UPA government for the undemocratic arrest; they demanded an early release of Anna and his aide. Subash Tuli a businessman said the incident has exposed the real face of the UPA government, which never wants the truth to unfold.

The NGO's have also planned a candle light march in the evening to spread the message among fellow residents.

Professor K.C. Arora said until the corrupt leaders are overthrown nothing worthwhile will happen, he claims that Anna's campaign had nothing to do with winning elections. "It is the call of the time that clean politicians like Anna should come forward and take the lead to construct a new corruption-free India. After all what is wrong in wanting to boot out corrupt rascals and trying to "reboot" the country," he added.

Young Municipal Councilor, Davinder Bajaj said it is time to put strong resistance in front of the old political, administrative and social set ups. He claims that only then will it be possible to create a new, corruption-free India.

Kiran Bedi says, Anna Hazare wants to continue fast at JP Park

NEW DELHI: Social activist Anna Hazare has refused to leave Tihar Jail till he is allowed to hold his planned fast at JP Park, according to his close confidante Kiran Bedi.

Speaking to reporters outside Tihar Jail, Bedi said Hazare wants no restrictions on his fast and after his release, plans to go to the venue to continue his fast for a strong Lokpal Bill.

Bedi said Hazare also wants Section 144 - that prohibits the gathering of five or more people - lifted from the venue, located next to Feroze Shah Kotla ground in the heart of the capital.

According to Manish Sisodia, another of Hazare's close aides, who was with him in jail and released in the evening, the 74-year-old activist is continuing with his fast that he began in the morning. Four others were also released with Sisodia.

Aaditya Bhanu directed the play and Nav Durha Kala Manch presented it. Hazare and his associates, including activists Arvind Kejriwal and Kiran Bedi were also arrested early on Tuesday.

Agarwal claimed the union has a membership of over 10,000 auto drivers.

"Like all other citizens of the country, auto drivers are too badly affected by corruption. And we condemn the way the Government is trying to crush the anti-corruption movement led by Hazare," Agarwal said.

Agarwal also said that all auto-drivers, belonging to the union, have been asked to participate in a protest march from India Gate to Parliament House tomorrow.

India against corruption: Anna Hazare, associates to be released tonight

NEW DELHI: In a dramatic turn of events, Anna Hazare and his associates are being released tonight from Tihar Jail after police decided to withdraw its case against them.

Delhi Police sources said that warrants of release have been sent to Tihar Jail authorities for freeing Hazare and his seven associates who were held this morning ahead of their plans to launch an indefinite strike for a strong Lokpal.

The sources said the decision to release was taken after government is understood to have come to the a conclusion that keeping him in jail would create unnecessary law and order situation.

Tihar jail sources said that all the eight had been kept in separate lock ups and would be freed soon.

Hazare and his associates had refused to take food during their detention under judicial remand.

Meanwhile, civil rights activists Kiran Bedi and Shanti Bhushan, detained by Delhi Police Tuesday morning ahead of Anna Hazare's fast-unto-death, were released in the evening, police said.

"Kiran Bedi and Shanti Bhushan have been released," Delhi Police spokesperson Rajan Bhagat told reporters. He said theirs was "preventive arrest".

Bedi and Bhushan were detained under the Delhi Police Act, on charges of refusing to comply with the directions given by a police officer.

Hazare, fellow activist Arvind Kejriwal and six supporters were sent to Tihar Jail by a special executive magistrate for not signing a bail bond and promising not to violate prohibitory orders.

Police had clamped prohibitory orders at the J.P.Park where the activists were planning to sit on fast against corruption.

India against corruption: Lawyers plan strike on Wednesday on Anna Hazare's arrest

NEW DELHI: Proceedings in Delhi courts are likely to be hit with lawyers in all the six district court complexes deciding to strike work on Wednesday to protest the arrest of anti-corruption activist Anna Hazare, an advocate said.

"We will hold a complete strike in all the local courts to support Anna's cause and also to oppose the prime minister's statement that the judiciary should not come under the Lokpal," said Rajiv Khosla, spokesperson of Co-ordination Committee of all Bar Association of Delhi.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh while addressing the nation on the 65th Independence Day, Monday said that the judiciary should not be under the Lokpal, he said.

Khosla said: "It is strange that despite rampant corruption, the government is supporting the exclusion of the judiciary from the purview of the Lokpal," he said.

By arresting Anna, the government was violating the fundamental rights of the people, he said.

Khosla did not blame Delhi Police alone for arresting Hazare, saying "they cannot function on their own, they function in accordance with the government's directions".

Hazare was Tuesday arrested and sent to Tihar Jail as Delhi Police moved to stop his fast-unto-death to press for a strong anti-corruption Lokpal bil

India against corruption: TDP chief hits out at UPA Government over Anna Hazare's arrest

HYDERABAD: Lashing out at the Centre for the arrest of social activist Anna Hazare and preventing him from undertaking an indefinite fast over the Lokpal issue, Telugu Desam president N Chandrababu Naidu led a protest of his party workers here and sought the immediate release of the Gandhian and his followers.

"The country needs a strong law to punish the corrupt and confiscate their ill-gotten wealth. Also, the corrupt people should be barred from contesting elections," the former Chief Minister demanded as he sat on a `dharna' at the Ambedkar Statue on Tank Bund this evening.

Earlier, Naidu, legislators and senior leaders of the party took out a rally from Khairatabad to Tank Bund to protest the arrest of Hazare and others.

The former Chief Minister strongly condemned lodging the Gandhian in Delhi's Tihar Jail where several leaders have been kept as undertrials on corruption charges.

The arrest of the septuagenarian, who was set to launch a hunger-strike in Delhi demanding a strong Lokpal Bill, was totally "undemocratic and unconstitutional", the Leader of Opposition said in a statement earlier.

"Prime Minister Manmohan Singh should apologise to the nation for having sent Hazare and other social activists, who are fighting against corruption, to Tihar jail. The arrest of Hazare and team is the height of despotic rule of the Congress -led UPA Government at the Centre that is suppressing all civil rights," Naidu maintained.

The TDP has extended full support to Hazare's fight against corruption.

Anna Hazare's arrest a reminder of Emergency days, says VHP

Anna Hazare's arrest a reminder of Emergency days, says VHP

NEW DELHI: Extending support to Anna Hazare's crusade against corruption, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad criticised the government for his arrest saying it was a reminder of the days of the Emergency.

The arrest of the social activist amounts to murder of democracy and showing disrespect to the feelings of people, VHP chief Ashok Singhal said in a statement here.

"The government is intoxicated by the lust for power and corruption and wants to crush all voices raised against it. The government action in arresting Anna Hazare for no reason reminds one of the days of Emergency in 1975," Singhal said.

He said instead of taking action and concrete steps against corruption and black money, the government was bent upon "throttling" voices against it by "use of force".

The VHP chief called upon people to raise their voice against such "autocratic" attitude of the government at different places across the country so that it does not dare initiate any such steps in future.

India against corruption: Hope government servants won't respond to Anna Hazare's mass leave call, says P Chidambaram

NEW DELHI: Home Minister P Chidambaram hoped government servants will not respond to the "wrong call" of mass leave given by Team Anna to them join their protests on the Lokpal issue.

"It is a completely wrong call. In a free country, anybody can even give wrong calls," he said when asked to comment on Team Anna's appeal to government servants to take mass leave.

"I sincerely hope that government servants will not respond to such wrong call," Chidambaram said.

Senior lawyer Prashant Bhushan, a close associate of Hazare, has asked government servants across the country to take mass leave and joint protests to press for a stronger Lokpal Bill.

India against corruption: Bihar erupts in support of Anna

PATNA: Within hours after Delhi Police picked up Anna Hazare, Bihar erupted in support of the anti-corruption crusader with spontaneous rallies being taken out in the state capital and several other towns, on Tuesday. At the city's historic Gandhi Maidan from where Loknayak JP gave the call for Total Revolution which led to the ouster of Indira Gandhi from power in 1977, slogans like "Anna nahi aandhi hai, bhrashtachariyo ki barbadi hai" rent the air as students, lawyers, doctors, teachers, senior citizens and even housewives with their children poured in to join hands with the India Against Corruption (IAC) activists. By noon, the number of protesters swelled to thousands.

"Main Annaji ko chhurane ayan huan (I have come to ensure release of Anna)," said six-year-old Lakshya Kumar of a DAV school. His elder brother Kanishq explained they skipped school to accompany their parents to the Gandhi Maidan.

Emotions ran high as an Anna-capped octogenarian, Kashikant Dev, wailed while speaking about the detention of the septuagenarian Gandhian in Delhi.

"The Delhi Police's highhandedness reminds me of emergency days of the 1970s," he said. Twelve IAC activists kept fast for the day. One of them, Chandraket Singh Chandel who practises law at the Patna high court, said that he would not break his fast until Anna was released. Wearing black bands, hundreds of students of National Institute of Technology took out a rally from their institute campus and assembled at the Gandhi Maidan. "The nation is passing through a crucial phase and the youth's support will decide its fate," said Nishant Kumar, an electrical engineering student. Many students of B N College, Patna Medical College, Patna College and Law College, besides others, also bunked their classes to join the anti-corruption crusade.

"If we are a free country, we have the right to organize peaceful protests," said Pratyush Kumar, an LLB student.

Satish Kumar, a differently abled teacher of Patna University, echoed Pratyush's views. IAC's Bihar coordinator Ratnesh Kumar Choudhary compared the Anna movement with JP movement. "Now or never," he thundered. There were many posts supporting Anna on the website of 'The Rising Bihar', an online community of Biharis. After Anna was sent to Tihar jail, a group of 300-odd supporters marched towards the Raj Bhavan. While they were stopped midway, a delegation submitted a memorandum to the governor.

In the evening, teachers, volunteers and students of the Art of Living (AoL) took out a candlelight march. A procession was also taken out by the students of CIMAGE, an educational institute. It was a spectacular sight as the students carried huge tricolours and chorused with the patriotic songs blaring out of the loudspeakers they had fitted on their vehicles.

Earlier in the day, the Patna high court lawyers took out a silent procession from the Ambedkar statue near the high court to the JP statue near the I-T roundabout. They were carrying placards that read, "Anna Hazare ke samarthan mein, Bhrashtachar ke khilaf (In support of Anna, against corruption)". "We will launch relay fast near the Ambedkar statue from August 17," lawyer Arwind Ujjawal said.

Followers of Indian social activist Anna Hazare shout slogans as they take part in a rally in Hyderabad on Tuesday, in support of the arrested campaigner.

Indian Home Minister P. Chidambaram said Tuesday that at least 1,200 people had been taken into custody in New Delhi as police acted to halt a hunger strike by a veteran anti-graft activist.
"A little over 1,200 or 1,300 people have been detained at different places," Chidambaram told reporters, adding that "we are not prohibiting a peaceful democratic protest".
He said the detentions had been due to protesters refusing to obey police conditions over the demonstration led by hunger striker Anna Hazare, who was among those held.
Police had told organizers that the high-profile rally at a public park in Delhi would be limited to 4-5,000 people and that it could only last three days.
Hazare's planned protest was to pressure the government into strengthening a new anti-corruption law.

India against corruption: Anna Hazare arrested for defying police orders, says Chidambaram

NEW DELHI: Strongly defending Anna Hazare's detention, Government on Tuesday said the Gandhian was taken into custody after Delhi Police came to a conclusion that he and his supporters would commit a "cognisable offence" by defying prohibitory orders.

Home Minister P Chidambaram said after being taken into custody, 73-year-old Hazare was taken to the Police Officers Mess in Civil Lines here and he will be produced before a magistrate.

"Police met Anna Hazare this morning and he told them that he intended to defy the prohibitory orders. At that time, police came to a conclusion that he will commit a congnisable offence. They invoked article 107 and 151 of CrPC which calls for preventive measures," he told a press conference.

Chidambaram was replying to a volley of questions on why Delhi Police detained Hazare and his supporters even before they defied the prohibitory orders.

He said around 1,200-1,300 people have been detained across the national capital. Six members of Team Anna Hazare were also detained, he said.

Chidambaram said if Hazare and his supporters were not happy with the conditions imposed by the Delhi Police for their proposed stir they could have challenged it in a court of law.

"They are free to go to court even now," the Home Minister said.

He also ridiculed Hazare's contention that their Jan Lokpal bill draft has to be considered, saying, "Laws cannot be made by social activists in a maidan."

India against corruption: Anna Hazare's arrest is 'murder of democracy', Parkash Singh Badal

LUDHIANA: Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal today strongly condemned the arrest of Gandhian Anna Hazare by the Delhi Police and termed it as "murder of democracy".

"The Congress has panicked over the movement of Anna Hazare as it is the Congress leaders who had stashed money abroad," the Chief Minister alleged.

"We are with the movement," Badal told reporters here. Meanwhile, people from all walks of life, including advocates and academicians, today took to streets at several places in Chandigarh, Punjab and Haryana voicing their support to civil society members in their crusade against corruption.

In Chandigarh, several intersections and round abouts were blocked by people, including advocates, officials said here.

A long queue of stranded vehicles was seen on several roads in Chandigarh in the wake of blockades laid by people.

In Punjab and Haryana, people took to streets and raised slogans in favour of civil society members and also blocked traffic.

Braving inclement weather at some places in the twin states of Punjab and Haryana, the people sat at several roads blocking the traffic.

The protesters alleged that the arrest of Gandhian Anna Hazare and others is an "undemocratic step" of the UPA government.

Activists of an NGO 'Awaaz' raised slogans against the UPA government at sector 7 and 8 traffic junction.

At the rally ground in Chandigarh, another NGO 'India Against Corruption' decided to sit on hunger strike in support of the civil society members.

NGO's founder member Davinder Sharma told reporters that five people from the NGO would sit on relay hunger strike till the government comes out with a strong Lokpal bill.

"I don't feel that I am living in world's largest democracy," Shammy Choudhary, a law student with Panjab University, said.

Meanwhile, security has been enhanced in both the states and their joint capital Chandigarh in view of protests and to prevent any eventuality.

India against corruption: Pranab Mukherjee accuses opposition of not allowing govt. to put forth views

India against corruption: Pranab Mukherjee accuses opposition of not allowing govt. to put forth views

NEW DELHI: Accusing the Opposition of not allowing government to put forth its views in Parliament on Anna Hazare's detention, two senior ministers today said such an attitude was "not fair" in a parliamentary system.

Talking to reporters separately, Leader of the Lok Sabha and Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal said opposition created a pandemonium in Parliament forcing its adjournment.

"Now a days, unfortunately, we are noticing that some of the opposition leaders are making their observations on a particular discussion and thereafter, when the questions are replied by the government, they are creating pandemonium and force an adjournment of the House. This is not fair in parliamentary practice," Mukherjee said.

His views were echoed by Bansal, who said it was an "old habit" of the Opposition of not allowing government to speak.

"They are making the system irrelevant," he said. Mukherjee said Bansal tried his best to impress upon the leaders of the opposition parties to let BJP leader Sushma Swaraj make her observation in the Question Hour and thereafter the Home Minister be allowed to make his observation.

"The Home Minister wanted to make the statement, we wanted to tell this country that it is legitimate right of every individual, group to have protest but at the same time there are certain rules, certain laws. If police considers that particular action may lead to law and order problem, police can impose certain conditions," he explained.

Mukherjee said while in a free country like India everybody had a right protest, there was a "method" to be adopted.

He said once police had imposed restrictions, it was for the parties concerned to decide in consultation with police and administration to take further action.

In reply to a question, Bansal said Congress members were not disrupting proceedings but were merely displaying copies of questions to be asked from government as they wanted the Question Hour to take place.

Congress MP Rashid Alvi accused Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj of "deciding" every morning whether or not to allow the House to run that day.

"This is very painful and unfortunate. The House should run, there should be debate inside the House. But the BJP's attitude is unconstitutional. They are not allowing both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha to function", Alvi said.

He also termed BJP member Rudra Narayan Pani's rushing to the Well in Rajya Sabha as "condemnable" and said the opposition was "not willing to apologise for it. This is condemnable".

India against corruption: 'I support Anna Hazare' says V.S. Achuthanandan

KOCHI: Veteran Marxist leader from Kerala V.S. Achuthanandan Tuesday expressed his full support to the struggle launched by Gandhian Anna Hazare for a strong Lokpal bill.

"I am fully with Hazare in his struggle. It is quite strange that he cannot even stage a protest. It is wrong on the part of the central government to take such a strong stand against a protest, which is a peaceful one," Achuthanandan told reporters here.

"The action reminds of the black days of Emergency. Even though I have reservations on the manner of his protest, those who oppose him behave like autocrats," he added.

Activists of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh's (RSS) students wing Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) took to the streets across the state, boycotting classes to protest the detention of Hazare.

Leading lights from all sections of the society staged a sit-in at the Martyrs Column in the heart of the state capital Thiruvananthapuram and protested Hazare's detention.

Hazare was detained by Delhi Police Tuesday morning as he was about to set out for his fast in support of a strong Lokpal bill. Activist Arvind Kejriwal was also detained along with him.

Sporadic protests broke out across the national capital, leading to the detention of more than 500 supporters, including former top cop Kiran Bedi and lawyer Shanti Bhushan.

CPI-M calls for protests after Anna Hazare's arrest

CPI-M calls for protests after Anna Hazare's arrest

NEW DELHI: The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) Tuesday asked its units to stage nationwide protests Wednesday to denounce the arrest of Gandhian activist Anna Hazare.

"The Manmohan Singh government has attacked the democratic right to conduct peaceful protest with the ban on the hunger strike and the arrest of Hazare and his supporters in Delhi," it said in a statement.

To protest "against this attack on democratic rights", the party asked its units to hold demonstrations Wednesday all over the country.

Earlier, in another statement, the CPI-M said the Congress had become intolerant of "any anti-corruption movement".

"This is an attack on the democratic rights of citizens to protest peacefully.

"It shows how the Congress leadership is intolerant to any anti-corruption movement as their government is itself steeped in high-level corruption."

The CPI-M dubbed the official Lokpal Bill presented in parliament by the government as "weak" and "inadequate".

"A strong popular movement has to be built up to ensure that an effective legislation is adopted by parliament," it said.

Lokpal Bill: Anna Hazare refuses to sign personal bond

NEW DELHI: Anna Hazare was on Tuesday sent to seven days' judicial custody after he refused to sign a personal bond and come out on bail following his arrest.

Hazare, who was arrested in the morning on grounds of apprehension of breach of peace following his intention to defy prohibitory orders to go on indefinite hunger strike, was produced before a Special Executive Magistrate.

Delhi Police Commissioner B K Gupta told a press conference that the police was not keen that he should be sent to judicial custody.

Gupta said the police was prepared for his being released on a personal bond if the Gandhian would have given an undertaking that he will not defy Section 144 of the CrPC that prohibits gathering of five or more people and also ask his supporters not to do so.

Sources said since Hazare refused to give an undertaking, the Magistrate remanded him to a seven-day judicial custody.

He was taken to Tihar jail where he would spend time in judicial custody. Three other leading activists of the team Hazare--Kiran Bedi, Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia-- were also sent to judicial custody on similar grounds.

JP leaders Sushma Swaraj & Arun Jaitley slammed the government for the arrest of Anna Hazare. "The government was trying to stifle the protest against corruption," Swaraj said while speaking to reporters.

Strongly defending Anna Hazare's detention, Government had earlier said the Gandhian was taken into custody after Delhi Police came to a conclusion that he and his supporters would commit a "cognisable offence" by defying prohibitory orders.
